The Impact of Removing Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion From Education

Op-Ed: Removing Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion From Education Will Hurt All Students

Alright, my friends, let’s dive into something that’s close to my heart and probably yours too—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Now, the very core of DEI is all about paving the way to equal opportunities, right? But here’s the kicker: Since President Donald Trump kicked off his second term, it seems like the opportunity staircase is slowly vanishing into thin air.

Once he took the oath, a wave of companies in the private sector, including the big tech honchos like Amazon and Meta, started pulling back their previous commitments to DEI. And guess who joined the bandwagon? The financial bigwigs, like JPMorgan Chase and Citi Group. Now, the real question is, what’s happening to that commitment to equality and fairness we were talking about?

But, it doesn’t end there. Interestingly, this rollback isn’t just leaving ripples in the private sector. Oh no, it has seeped into the education realm as well. Enter Critical Race Theory (CRT), a concept that emerged in the legal sanctums of Harvard Law School, way back in the 70s and 80s. Derrick Bell, one of the great minds behind this theory, foresaw how racism has slipped into policies that might seem impartial on the surface. He insisted that racism isn’t just a personal issue. Nope, it’s deeply rooted in institutions.

So, the scenario is clear, folks. We have significant hurdles threatening the principles of DEI in our society. But remember, awareness is the first step to change. So, let’s stay alert, stay informed, and let our collective voices ring loud for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Let’s turn the tide together.
