However, the term has been twisted and turned into a conservative catchphrase that represents anything that doesn’t dance to the rhythm of straight white male ideals.

See, it seems like the Trump administration has a keen knack for launching an all-out blitz against DEI. Their target audience? Every federal agency, academic institution, and corporate beast that dares to implement policies that promote fairness and equality. Their weaponry of choice? Policies aimed at halting affirmative action, tweaking hiring laws, and smothering any inkling of efforts towards racial and gender representation. For this team, the mountain that is DEI is looking more and more like the desired battlefield.

Now, where does DEI crop up, you might ask? Well, it’s everywhere! It’s present in the lyrics of Kendrick’s Super Bowl halftime show, it’s underscored in the reports of plane crashes, and it’s even nestled in your morning cup of Joe.

However, it’s important to note that the effective implementation and proper contextual application of diversity have taken a backseat recently. Rather than a bridge towards equal opportunities for all, especially in the aftershock of the civil rights movement, DEI has been framed as a lowering of standards—a deceitful narrative fueled eagerly by the Trump administration.
